Mahala Yates, 65 and a resident of New Mexico since the early 1970s, died March 28, 2007, in Albuquerque. Mahala worked as a cardiovascular technician for more than 30 years. She was devoted to her family, friends and loved spending time with her grandchildren. She raised three strong, independent girls. Mahala had a smile that lit the room. She was preceded in death by her husband, Samuel Mitchell Yates, in 1970. She is survived by: her companion, Buddie Chappell of Corrales; children, Colleen Yates of Fremantle, Australia, Kelly Yates Longley, former-son-law, Luc Longley of Cottesloe, Australia, and Schanen Yates Unser and fiancee Christian Questad of Boise, Idaho; her brother, Nelson Zajac and wife, Juanita of Michigan; six grandchildren, Natasha Yates, Samuel Yates Lehman, Clare Longley, Lily Longley, Bobby Unser III and Ruby Unser; one nephew; three nieces; and beloved dog, Rudolph Von Schnauzerkraut III. Funeral Service will be 11 a.m. Tuesday, April 3, in the chapel of Daniels Family Funeral Services, 4310 Sara Road in Rio Rancho.
