Obituary for PAUL

Published in the Albuquerque Journal on Sunday March 11, 2007

Gordon Wesley Paul, 86, of Alpharetta, GA, passed away March 3, 2007 after a brief illness. Mr. Paul was a native of Medford, OR and grew up in Glendale, CA, where he was active in sports and music, playing the French horn in the Sheriff's Boys Band. As a university student at UCLA, Mr. Paul worked summers at Camp Curry in Yosemite, hiking and enjoying the park in his free time. He once hiked from Tuolomne Meadows to the summit of Mount Lyell and back - 24 hours of continuous hiking. After graduating from UCLA in 1942 with a degree in Accounting, he entered the Army Air Corps as a statistician. While stationed in Washington, PA, he met and married Wilma Albus of Wheeling, WV. Following a transfer to San Francisco and the end of the war, Mr. Paul moved to Albuquerque, NM, and began a career as a Certified Public Accountant with Linder, Burk, & Stephenson, achieving partner status in 1951. In 1956, Linder, Burk & Stephenson merged with Peat, Marwick & Mitchell (now KPMG) and Mr. Paul became a partner with PM&M in 1957. In 1969, he rose to the position of managing partner of the Albuquerque office. During his career in Albuquerque, he served actively with several organizations including the Albuquerque Symphony, Kiwanis Club, and the YMCA. Following his retirement in 1977, Mr. Paul remained in Albuquerque and traveled extensively with his wife. He developed an interest in genealogy as a hobby, sparked by his knowledge of the immigration of the Paul ancestors from England to America in 1685. Paulsboro, NJ was named after these early immigrants. Mr. Paul researched and published six books on the Paul-Boyd and Albus-Clark (Mrs. Paul's family) lineages, and was still engaged in gathering information on other branches of both families when he passed away. After living in Albuquerque for 57 years, Mr. Paul and his wife moved to Alpharetta to be closer to their younger son, Andy. Mr. Paul is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Wilma; loving sons and their wives, Gordon and Elaine Paul of Libertyville, IL, Andy and Nadeen Paul of Alpharetta; his grandchildren Thad Paul of Washington, D.C., Garrett Paul of Alpharetta, Heidi Paul Perry and her husband Graham Perry of San Francisco; and great-grandchild, Grant Perry of San Francisco. Grandson, Scott Paul of Alpharetta preceded his grandfather in death in 2005. Mr. Paul is also survived by two brothers, Floyd Paul of Glendale, CA, and Robert Paul of Kirkland, WA, and by numerous nieces and nephews. A private service will be held at Morningside Presbyterian Church in Atlanta. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to Morningside Presbyterian Church, Youth Programs, 1411 Morningside Drive, Atlanta, GA 30306, phone 404-876-7396, email office@morningsidepc.org.
