Published in the Albuquerque Journal on Sunday March 11, 2007

Gene Frumkin, age 79, passed away February 18, 2007 in his home. Gene was born in New York City, January 29, 1928, to Samuel and Sarah Frumkin. In 1938 they moved to Los Angeles for Gene's health. Gene graduated from UCLA in 1951 with a Bachelor's Degree in English. He was Managing Editor, then the Executive Editor of California Apparel News. In 1966 UNM offered him a one-year lectureship, where he continued to work for the next 30 years, serving as a major force in creating and strengthening the Creative Writing program in the English Department. He retired in 1994 and continued to write poetry, participate in poetry groups and readings, and publish his collections. In retirement he remained an inspiration to his former students and colleagues. He is survived by his daughter, Celena Allison and her husband, Peter, of Santa Cruz, CA; his son, Paul Frumkin and his wife, Joanna, and their two children, Alison and Daniel, of Albuquerque; and the many, many friends he touched throughout his life. A Celebration of Gene's Life will be held this Spring. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the American Heart Association.
