Obituary for THOMPSON

W. Ragon Thompson M.D., a true southern gentleman, gardener, skier, and world traveler died on January 26, 2007 at the age of 71 after a long struggle with Alzheimer's. He was born on September 8, 1935 in Clarksville, Arkansas to Anna Augusta Ragon Thompson and Roger Leon "Buster" Thompson. His parents; his sister, Luanne Thompson; and his sister-in-law, Jan Thompson, preceded him in death. He is survived by his brother, Byron Alfred Thompson and niece, Anna Beth Thompson of Springdale, Arkansas; his aunt, Mary Johnson of Clarksville, Arkansas; his cousins, Kay Nevins of Searcy, Arkansas, Rosemary Dyke of Little Rock, Arkansas, Lee Ragon of Denver, Colorado; his adopted daughter, Madonna Stewart and her brothers and sisters and their families. He is also survived by his friend of thirty years, Charlotte Mary Toulouse, the extended Toulouse family, and his wonderful caregivers and friends, Ben Megah, Denise Corder, Victoria Secrest, Linda Heflin, Tiffany Megah, Geneva Megah and Heritage Hospice. At the age of 17 Dr. Thompson entered The University of the Ozarks in Clarksville. Upon earning his undergraduate degree in 1956 he went on to medical school at the University of Arkansas in Little Rock. After graduation from medical school he came to Albuquerque where he did an internship at the University of New Mexico Medical School. He completed a residency in 1968 at the University of Arkansas in Little Rock in Obstetrics and Gynecology, which became his specialty for the rest of his medical career. He served in the United States Air Force as a Captain from 1963 to 1965. In 1968 he returned to Albuquerque where he worked at Lovelace Clinic and in 1973 he entered private practice with his friend and colleague Scott Taylor M.D. until he retired from medicine in 1986. He then moved to Ouray, Colorado where he owned two art galleries and became an excellent picture framer. In 2002 he moved back to Albuquerque so he could be surrounded by loving friends who would help him through his final journey. A Memorial Service will be held at French Mortuary, 10500 Lomas Blvd. NE, at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, February 17, 2006 with the The Rev. Geoffrey Butcher from Nashville, Tennessee officiating. He will be buried in the family plot in Clarksville, Arkansas. Donations in memory of Dr. Thompson can be made to two of the organizations where he gave not only of his money but his time, Planned Parenthood of New Mexico, 701 San Mateo NE, Albuquerque, NM 87108, or Second Chance Humane Society, PO Box 2096, Ridgway, CO 81432. If you were one of the hundreds of infants or the mother of one he delivered there will be a display at the mortuary where a picture of the babies as he first saw them and as the adults they have become can be placed anytime this week, during normal business hours, and prior to the service.
