Obituary for BRIGGS

Published in the Albuquerque Journal on Wednesday January 03, 2007

Herbert R. Briggs, 86, peacefully left this earth surrounded by family members on Wednesday, December 20, 2006 after a very brief illness. He was preceded in death by Aileen, his wife of 38 years. He is survived by his brother, William C. Briggs of Albuquerque; son, Randy Briggs; and daughter, JoAnn Briggs, both of Albuquerque; grandchildren: Royce and Derek Briggs, and Jacinda and Danielle Wortman; nephew, Chris Briggs, wife, Pat and children; nephew, Charles Briggs, wife, Clara and children. A lifelong resident and second generation Albuquerquean, Herb was born December 8, 1920. He graduated from Albuquerque High School, attended Northwestern University and graduated from the University of New Mexico. Music was his passion in life from a very early age. From traveling the state selling musical instruments for May's Music Co., to being a drummer in the U.S. Army marching band, a concert percussionist in the NM Symphony Orchestra, nearly everything he ventured into in life involved music. He opened the first retail high fidelity store in the region, even prior to the advent of stereo. He and Aileen owned and operated the Hi-Fi House on Monte Vista near UNM for over 35 years. He wired and installed sound equipment at Johnson Gym, Tingley Coliseum, UNM Stadium, and together they served the music and audio needs of area residents in a caring and personal manner. He was a strong supporter of the arts in the community. Herb was on the board of Planned Parenthood and sang with a Seniors Group that performed at retirement homes. As an active member of The Rotary Club of Albuquerque for 52 years, Herb was a recipient of their highest international honor, the Paul Harris Fellow Award. Those who knew Herb appreciated his positive attitude and exuberance for life and learning. Herb "beat" and truly "lived" the rhythm of life! A Memorial Service will be held Friday, January 5, 2007 at 11:00 a.m. at the Alumni Memorial Chapel, The University of New Mexico Campus (505-277-5808). In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Herb's name to the scholarship fund at Hummingbird Music Camp, 104 Hummingbird Lane, Jemez Springs, NM - 87025.
