Obituary for KATZ

Published in the Albuquerque Journal on Saturday November 04, 2006

David Nathan Katz, 98, a longtime resident of Albuquerque, died Monday, October 30, 2006, after a long illness. He is survived by his wife, Frances of Albuquerque; children, Dr. Murray Katz and wife, Sali of Tucson, AZ and Dr. Michael Katz and wife, Dr. Marsha Bol of San Antonio, TX and Santa Fe, NM; grandsons, Mason Katz of San Diego, CA and Aaron Katz of Tucson; brother, Dr. Robert Katz of Denver, CO; sister-in-law, Leatrice Segal of Philadelphia, PA; loving nieces and nephews; many dear friends; and Carmen and Curtis Hudson, who cared for him lovingly in the last year of his life. He was preceded in death by his sisters, Ann Levick and Jeanette Katelman. Like his father, a founder of Congregation B'Nai Israel, he was a longtime Congregation member. David was a lifetime member of B'Nai B'rith and a Shriner and Mason. Born in 1908 of Lithuanian immigrant parents in Des Moines, IA, David moved with his family to Albuquerque in 1916. After graduating from Albuquerque High School, he became purchasing agent for the U.S. Indian Service, where he coached football and basketball teams at the local Indian School. In the 1940s he was purchasing agent for a Japanese relocation center in Colorado, where he made lasting friendships with internees, and served in the U.S. Navy. David was the former owner of the Gizmo Store in Albuquerque. Upon retirement, David and Frances became world travelers; and they shared many trips with their family. He took up golf, which he played daily -- making a hole-in-one at age 85 -- until he was no longer able. He was a master of the pun and in late life the CRYPTOQUIP. He will remain forever in the hearts and memories of his family and friends. Graveside Services will be held Monday, November 6, 2006, 11:30 a.m., at Fairview Memorial Park, 700 Yale Blvd. SE, with lunch to follow at Congregation B'Nai Israel. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Congregation B'Nai Israel, 4401 Indian School Rd. NE, Albuquerque, 87110 or the charity of your choice. Arrangements by French Mortuary 10500 Lomas Blvd. NE (505) 275-3500
