Obituary for JONES

J. Wilbur Jones, 94, a resident of Albuquerque since 1938, died Monday, October 16, 2006 after a lengthy illness. Wilbur was born February 7, 1912 in Oskaloosa, IA. He moved to Denver, CO at age 14, and did odd jobs until he went to work for his uncle in the sign business at 15th and Colfax. Wilbur moved to Albuquerque in 1938, working for Electrical Products Consolidated from 1938 to 1941. Wilbur was deferred from military service to become Electrical Foreman on National Defense Projects from 1941 to 1943, which included Los Alamos, Walker AFB, Roswell, Bruns Hospital, Santa Fe, Internment Camp at Lordsburg, Camp Roberts at Las Vegas, NM, before returning to the electrical sign business. Wilbur was Electrical Administrator for the state electrical board from 1943 to 1945. From 1945 to 1969 Wilbur was owner/operator of QRS Neon, which later became Electrical Products of New Mexico. Wilbur managed Electrical Products for new owners from 1970 to 1972, then retired. Wilbur was a member of B.P.O.E. #461 for 51 plus years. He was the first president of the Rio Grande Kiwanis Club. He was a 65 year member of I.B.E.W. Wilbur built a beautiful fishing cabin at El Vado Lake in 1939. He also built a home in Kino Bay, Mexico to fish in the winter months. Wilbur built a cabin at Angel Fire, but later sold that cabin to spend winter months at Happy Trails Resort in Surprise, AZ, mostly playing golf and cards. Wilbur was preceded in death by his wife, Gladys M. Smith Jones in 1980. Wilbur is survived by his daughter, Naydene R. Plath and husband, John L. of Albuquerque; son, James W. Jones, Jr. (Jimmy) and wife, Patti of Escondido, CA; step-daughter, Darlene J. Shannon of Victor, MT; step-son, Ronald E. Smith Jones; traveling companion and friend, Phyllis Yager; niece, Marian Jones Stummp and husband, Victor; numerous other nieces and one nephew; grandchildren, John W. Plath and wife, Shelley, Debbie R. Archer and husband, Randy, Kathy A. Cooper and husband, Chad, Jamie L. Davidson and husband, Rick, Larry D. Plath and wife, Lynda, all of Albuquerque, James M. Jones and wife, Debbie of Idaho, Linda P. Stensgard and husband, Jeff of Albany, OR, Cynthia A. White of Santa Rosa, CA, Christopher T. Jones and Donald J. Jones of Tucson, AZ, Patricia Graves and husband, Paul of Victor, MT, Cheryl Winkelmann and husband, Mike of St. Louis, MO, Stephen P. Shannon and wife, Judy of Victor, MT, Shelly Kelly and husband, Steve of Albuquerque, Randy and Danny Jones of Springton, TX; 26 great-grandchildren; and 21 great-great-grandchildren, whom he loved very much. Friends may visit French Mortuary, University Blvd. Chapel, Friday, October 20, 2006, 5:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Graveside Services will be held Saturday, October 21, 2006, at 11:30 a.m., at Sunset Memorial Park, 924 Menaul Blvd. NE.
