Obituary for ORTEGA

Howard Estelano, Fireman 1st Class, USN. Memorial Services will be held at the Santa Fe National Cemetery on Friday, September 8, 2006, 11:30 a.m. and on Saturday, September 9, 2006, 11:30 a.m., at St. Elenas Catholic Church in Pastura, Guadalupe County. There will be a Mass of Intention for Howard Estelano Ortega, at Cathedral Basicila of St. Francis of Assisi, Santa Fe, requested by Monsignor Sipio Salason Friday, September 8, 2006, 7:00 a.m. Seaman Ortega had been missing in action since May 4, 1945, when his submarine, the USS Lagarto, (SS-371) was sunk by the Japanese in shallow waters near the the Bay of Thailand (Siam). Seaman Ortega, born September 29, 1925, was 19 when he died, would have been 81 this September. He was the son of Alberto C. Ortega and Carolina (Clancey) Ortega. Alberto was the manger of the Charles Ilfeld Pastura Trading Company Mercantile Store from the mid 1920's till its closing in the 1950's. Carolina "Clancey" Ortega's father, Cap John Clancey, of the Puerto de Luna area, was one of the original signers of the New Mexico Constitution. Seaman Ortega's parents; two older brothers, Alberto Clancey I, and Victor Carlos; an older sister, Mary Isabel Ortega Snyder; nephew Alberto Clancey Ortega II; and sister-in-law, Mary Salas are deceased. He is survived by another older sister, retired nun, Sister Carolyn Ortega, of Huntington, IN: nieces, Denise Ortega Tokoph, husband, David Tokoph, El Paso TX, Diantha Ortega Tokoph, husband, Gary Tokpoh, Albuquerque, and Ann Snyder, Portland, OR; nephews, Don Snyder, Walnut Creek, CA, Greg Snyder, Marian, CA; brother-in-law, Eugene Snyder, Walnut Creek, CA; cousins, Clancey-Tarbox Family, Howard Hansen, Wheatridge, CO, Angeline Kinnaman, Rawlins, WY, Chuck and Larry Marken, Albuquerque. Thanks to all of our friends who have assisted us with all of the arrangements, especially the George and Bobbie Sims Families.
