Obituary for SANDOVAL

Published in the Albuquerque Journal on Thursday August 24, 2006

Ildefonzo Ernesto "Ernie" Sandoval, 82, was called home by our Heavenly Father on Sunday, August 20, 2006 after a long battle with lung cancer. Born on November 12, 1923 in Taos, NM, he was a lifelong resident of New Mexico and a resident of Albuquerque since 1948. Ernie worked in the CCC Camps before serving in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II. He also served as a Civil Service Contractor in Vietnam from 1965 to 1970. However, his life's work was as a Journeyman Bricklayer and General Contractor until his retirement in 1985. He was a member and past president of the Bricklayer's Union, Local #2, as well as a lifetime member of the American Legion and the DAV. In his free time, he was an avid fisherman, hunter, and gardener. He loved his family, and is survived by his wife, Maria "Rose" Sandoval, and their children, Richard Ernest Sandoval and wife, Linda of Royalton, MN, Patricia A. DeMar and husband, John of Corrales, NM, Loretta Sandoval and husband, Ty Menefee of Albuquerque, Cecilia Sandoval, Steve Moritz of Albuquerque, and Daniel Sandoval and wife, Tammy of Anchorage, AK; along with 11 grandchildren, Debbie, Michelle, Ana, Elizabeth, Richard, Philip, Loren, Nichol, Arthur, Ryan, and Kyle; and 12 great-grandchildren, who will always remember him as a loving father and grandfather. He is also survived by his sisters, Carolyn Hughes of Taos, NM, and Rose Stewart of Albuquerque, and brother, Antonio Sandoval of Taos, NM. Everyone who knew him was blessed by his beautiful smile, cheerful optimism, quick wit, and generous spirit. He was dearly loved and admired by a large extended family and many friends. He shone with a vivaciousness and zeal for life that was contagious, and although he no longer shines, we carry a memory of his brilliance in our hearts. The family acknowledges and lovingly appreciates the special care and support offered by all members of the family, especially Loren Menefee, Anna Sandoval, Nichol Sandoval, Sandra Tidwell, and Tom and Carla Trujillo. The family also extends their gratitude to the staff at Ambercare Hospice (especially Delores Pederson) for their loving care and support during this difficult time.
