Obituary for GARCIA

Published in the Albuquerque Journal on Sunday July 09, 2006

Beverly G. Garcia, 82, born in Erick, OK on September 24, 1923, grew up in Sayre, OK and Placerville, CA, passed away in Albuquerque on July 5, 2006. She moved to Albuquerque from Ft. Worth, TX in 1970 and became a passionate North Valley devotee. A lifelong, political and community activist; her presence was felt in the Democratic Party from the state level to the ward level to the local level, where she continued to be a political voice until her stroke in April. Beverly was on the Mayor's Advisory Board for the Office of Senior Affairs, a longtime organizer of the Senior Expo Quilt Show for the City of Albuquerque, Board Member of De Colores (Hispanic Culture Festival), founding member of the Mid-North Valley Neighborhood Association, founding member of the Retired and Middle Aged Persons' Association, and former President of the New Mexico Quilter's Association. Prior to her decades of public service, Beverly enjoyed a career with the F.A.A. as a Telecommunications Specialist, working at Meacham Field in Ft. Worth and owned the Quilting B's in the North Valley from 1978 to 1980. Beverly also survived 61 years of mothering, raising five children, and she was the beloved grandmother of ten grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Beverly was preceded in death by her husband, Mike Garcia; her son, Garrett Whatley; and her grandson, Beau Whatley. Her life was as colorful, complicated, intricate and unique, as the thousands of bits of fabric she used to create one-of-a-kind quilts. She was one of a kind, one in a million, our one true thing - our thread of steel. Beverly is survived by her sons, Don Whatley, J.R. Whatley, and Paul Whatley of Albuquerque; and her daughter, Jean Shepherd of St. Louis, MO; ten grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren; and legions of people she has touched with her generous soul. Funeral Services will be Monday, July 10, 2006, 10:00 a.m., at the Chapel at Sunset Memorial Park, 924 Menaul Blvd. NE. 505-345-3536. Visitation will be held prior to Services.
