Obituary for KARGES

Herbert George Karges, 98, of Castle Rock, CO, a native of Fargo, ND, peacefully passed away on May 24, 2006. Celebration of his life took place at the First United Methodist Church in Castle Rock on Monday, May 29, 2006. Herb was the beloved husband of the late Grace I. Karges, formerly of Bismarck, ND. Herb and Grace were married 73 years. He was the loving father of Robert Karges of Colorado Springs, CO and Thomas Karges of Castle Rock. Proud Grandfather of Natasha Karges, Englewood, CO; Chad Karges, Burns, OR; Kip Karges, Chester, SD; Brock Karges, Purcell, OK; and Travis Linn, Brookings, SD. Dear brother of the late William Karges and Margaret Jacobs, both of Fargo, ND. Herbert had nine great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. As a young man, Herbert was a canoeist, raised American Water Spaniels and helped his father build their lake cottage on Little Floyd Lake in Detroit Lakes, MN. He continued to be an avid sportsman, fisherman, and hunter throughout his long life. He graduated in 1931 from North Dakota State University in Civil Engineering and spent his career in the aviation industry constructing U.S.A. airports. He retired in 1973 from the Federal Aviation Administration in Ft. Worth, TX. Prior to moving to Castle Rock in 1992, the couple lived in Albuquerque, NM where Herb was a member of the New Mexico Senior Olympic Swim Team. He placed third in 50 meters freestyle at the National Senior Olympic Games in Buffalo, NY. Herb also was an avid Cribbage and Bridge player and an active volunteer for his church and Mended Hearts. Some of the places that Herb and Grace traveled to during their retirement were China, the Middle East and the Holy Land, Europe and Alaska.
