Jerry W. McKinney, 68, a former resident of Albuquerque, who returned to the City in 2004 after 22 years in Washington, DC, died Friday, May 26, 2006, the victim of a rafting accident in Farmington, NM. He is survived by his wife of 34 years, Kay McKinney; daughters, Kathy Low and husband, James of Palo Alto, CA, Ellen McKinney and partner, Tami Hamilton of Menlo Park, CA; grandchildren, Jeremy Low and Lindsey Day of Fresno, CA, Candace Low of Palo Alto, CA, and Stephanie Keith of Menlo Park, CA; great-grandson, J.J. Low of Fresno, CA; sister, Margie Jordan and husband, Tom, of Hondo, TX; mother-in-law, Valda Cooper Lavender of Rio Rancho and Farmington, NM; brother-in-law, Cy Cooper and wife, Manalynn of Farmington, NM; and numerous nieces and nephews. Jerry was born September 17, 1937 in Esperanza, TX. He served as a flight instructor in the Navy and worked in radio, TV and newspapers in Uvalde and Corpus Christi, TX, Albuquerque, and Washington, DC. Jerry coordinated the campaign media for the late Congressman Joe Skeen's write-in campaign and subsequently served as his press secretary. He then worked for Voice of America and covered the White House, Pentagon and State Department. He also covered the national political conventions live with millions of viewers worldwide. Jerry coordinated Voice of America's coverage of the uprising in Tiananmen Square. He went on to become the bureau chief at the Tokyo Bureau and covered Japan and Korea. Jerry worked with the Traveling Press Corp and covered the presidential campaigns for Dukakis, Clinton, and the first George Bush. He was also involved with the national press covering inaugurals. Jerry was an active member of the Bernalillo County Republican party. Since his return to Albuquerque, Jerry was chosen for a number of bit parts in movies and television commercials. He was a lector at San Felipe de Neri Catholic Church in Albuquerque. Jerry loved to garden - growing roses, tomatoes, and green chili. Mass of Resurrection will be Wednesday, 10:00 a.m., at San Felipe de Neri Catholic Church, 2005 North Plaza NW. A Memorial Mass will be celebrated Thursday, 10:00, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Farmington, NM. Interment will take place at Greenlawn Cemetery in Farmington.
