Obituary for HEDGES

Richard Ernest "Dick" Hedges was born Sunday, October 20, 1920, in Lake Arthur, Chaves, NM, and was the son of Ned and Pearl Hoard Hedges. He died on Monday, May 8, 2006, at the home his niece and her husband, Marilyn and Steve Higgins of Norman, OK. His age was 85 years, 6 months, 18 days. Richard was never married and had no children. He was the brother of Naomi L. Taylor, deceased, a long-time Norman, OK resident. He is survived by his elder brother, Ralph Edward Hedges of Purcell, OK. Nephews are: William E Taylor of Los Angeles, CA and Richard D. Taylor Midwest City, OK. Also included are five grand-nephews: Chris L. Chancellor of Moore, OK, Michael S. Chancellor of Houston, TX, Bryan S. Higgins, of Norman, OK, Will W. Higgins of Beggs, OK, Christophor Taylor of California; and one grand-niece, Gwendolyn Taylor Schlaud of Ulm, Germany. Great-grand-nephews are: Joshuah L. Chancellor of Norman, OK, Chris L. Chancellor, Jr. of Lawton, OK, twins Simon Schlaud and Lennart Schlaud of Ulm, Germany, Andrew Stephens of Norman, OK; and great-grand-niece, Justine Elizabeth Chancellor of Moore, OK. Richard completed his high school education at Lake Arthur, NM and in 1939-1940 obtained an accounting degree from Eastern New Mexico Junior College, Portales, NM. In 1940, he began working for the Government Printing Office, Purchasing Division, as a Clerk-Typist in Washington, D.C. After consecutive service in the U.S. Army and U.S. Navy during WWII, Richard began work in 1948-1949 for the Albuquerque Atomic Energy Commission, Sandia Base, NM. He enjoyed traveling Europe and was working for International Bechtel, Inc. of Dhahran, Saudi Arabia, in 1949-1951, Atlas Constructors, Casablanca, French Morocco, 1951-1953 and during 1953-1958 he worked for Jones and Guerrero Co., in San Francisco, CA. In 1959, he began work for Santa Fe Railway in Albuquerque, NM. In the early 1990s he retired from Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroad and moved to Norman, OK to be close to his family. Military service included: Aviation Cadet, Army of the United States, honorable discharge November 6, 1941, Jackson, MS and served as a Marine Medic, Pharmacist Mate First Class, United States Navy, honorable discharge, January 26, 1945, U.S. Navy Hospital, Seattle, WA.
