Obituary for SANDS

Helen Sands passed away at age 91. She was preceded in death by her husband, Louis Sands. Helen came to Albuquerque in 1944. She was co-owner of Sandia Family Store with Bessie Shapiro and Ruth Mager Bernstein for 36 years. Helen later worked for Savon Flower Shops. Helen is survived by two sons, Barry Sands and wife, Eva of Cleveland, and Ron Sands and wife, Henia of Phoenix; a daughter, Carol Foster and husband, Robert of Albuquerque; five grandchildren, Dr. Daniel Sands and wife, Libby of Boston, Anya Rudd and husband, John of Cleveland, Penny, Cindy, Annie Sands, all of Phoenix; seven great-grandchildren, Jackson, Mia, Katrina, all of Cleveland, Amanda, Francesca Sands of Boston, Aiden and Jordon of Oklahoma; nieces and nephews, Karen Mager, Anita Miller and Ken Mager, William and Henry Roth. Helen was a life member of Congregation B'nai Israel and Hadassah. She was honored as one of the first women to carry the Torah on Kol Nidre night services. She was voted "Women of Achievement" of 1982. She was a volunteer to Torah Fund, Chapter II, Sunshine lady for the gift shop at Congregation B'Nai Israel, "Project Shore" to feed the homeless. At her retirement home she was nominated resident of the month and was a resident greeter as well. Graveside Services for Mrs. Sands will be held Wednesday, March 22, 2006 at 11:00 a.m. in Fairview Memorial Park Cemetery with Rabbi Arthur Flicker and Cantor Caitlin Bromberg officiating.
