Obituary for DANIEL

Published in the Albuquerque Journal on Tuesday February 21, 2006

Dena Hart Daniel, who raised children during the Great Depression, started a successful mail-order business, mastered computers and the Internet in her eighties, took good care of her neighbors, and cursed George Bush and Karl Rove to the last, died on Saturday, February 18, 2006, in Albuquerque. Her passing was a peaceful one with her son and daughter present. Dena was 91. Born in Sweet Grass County, MT on December 25, 1914 to Guy and Naomi Hart, she married John Marshall Daniel in McLeansboro, IL in 1933. John worked as editor of the McLeansboro Times Leader and later the Centralia Sentinel. John and Dena moved to Albuquerque in 1958 where he died in 1985. Also preceding her in death were two daughters, Madonna Daniel and Joan Jackson. A woman of fierce intelligence, independent spirit, and razor wit, Dena touched many lives as a role model and mentor. She was a philosopher of common sense and loved to garden and tinker with gadgets. Family and friends turned to her for counsel of the heart and her advice was highly sought after by neighbors when it came to home maintenance and household repairs. If you needed someone to light your furnace or fix your swamp cooler, Dena was your gal. (when she was 85 , her next-door neighbors finally had to intercede and restrain her from going up on the roof.) A staunch Democrat, she read voraciously and kept abreast of current events until her final days. Dena is survived by two children, Jacklyn Adams and John Daniel, both of Albuquerque; nine grandchildren, Gwen Mezosi, Daniel Jackson, Kathryn Jackson, Marsha Eberhardt, Janet Jackson, Lauren Kivler-Gross, Bruce Adams, Eric Adams, and Wayne Adams; 14 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren. A Graveside Service will be held on Thursday, February 23, 2006 at 2:30 p.m. at Fairview Memorial Park, 700 Yale Blvd. SE (the corner of Yale and Cesar Chavez SE). Memorial donations in lieu of flowers may be made to The Salvation Army. Arrangements by: Fitzgerald & Son, 3113 Carlisle Blvd. NE, Albuquerque, NM 87110, 505-884-1188
