Alice Halsey Arnold. Born to Louis and Christine (Ironeyes) Halsey in Wakpala, SD, on October 16, 1914, Alice Marie Halsey was one of eight brothers and sisters. Growing up on Standing Rock (Sioux) Reservation, as a child she attended St. Bernard's Mission School and Standing Rock Boarding School. She graduated from Wakpala High School, SD, in 1938. In 1939 Alice left the Dakotas to attend UNM. She met and married a UNM classmate, Private Rhodes F. Arnold, in 1942. She left school at UNM as a junior to accompany him to Rapid City, SD, and Ellsworth AFB. When he transferred to Shemya Island in the Aleutians for the duration of WWII, Alice returned to Fort Yates to be with her parents and give birth to her son, Rhodes Felton Arnold, III, affectionately known as "Pancho." For the remainder of her life she worked as a homemaker, spending many years in Albuquerque, NM, and Tucson, AZ. Upon his retirement from teaching and USAF Reserves, Lt Col. Arnold moved Alice to Reserve, NM. Alice was often asked to help her daughter Raquel watch her children while her husband was away with the U.S. Navy. In 1993, both David L. and Raquel Roybal retired as lieutenant commanders. Divorced in 1993, after fifty years of marriage, Alice moved to Albuquerque to live with her daughter and family. Alice passed away at her daughter's home in Albuquerque, on January 30, 2006, after a decline from a stroke suffered in April of 2005. Alice is survived by younger sister, Margaret Teachout; and by her son, Rhodes III; and daughter, Raquel. Additionally, grandsons, James Arnold and David J. Roybal; grand-daughters, Danielle Peralta and Laura Roybal; and great-grandchildren, Andrea Duran, Gabriella Roybal, Brooke and Colton Arnold, Victor and Alexandra Peralta, and newborn, Jacob D. Roybal, survive her. Ceremonies were held in North Dakota, including a Rosary February 3, 2006 in Mandan, and Mass and interment at St. Peter's Catholic Church and Cemetery, Fort Yates on February 4, 2006. Donations may be made in her name to any cancer research foundation.
