Obituary for PEMBROKE

Oliver L. Pembroke, familiarly called "coach" or "Ollie" by his many friends and former students, died on December 29, 2005. He was born in Alma, MI to Mimmie Mae and Oliver L. Pembroke Sr. on September 22, 1907, the eldest of 7 boys. Ollie was so outstanding a football player that he was invited to Kalamazoo College on a work study scholarship, then graduated from Michigan Western State Teacher's College as a P.E. instructor. In that capacity he worked in Bay City, MI, Grants, NM, and in Albuquerque, NM at Monroe Jr. high, coaching football and basketball. He married Louise Rickabaugh, also a teacher, who preceded him in death in May 2004. During WWII he served in the U.S. Navy. After their retirement they enjoyed extensive traveling including most of U.S. Central and South America, Europe, China, and Australia. They were co-founders of a fellowship, which became the First Unitarian Church in Albuquerque. Ollie is survived by his niece, Mary Lour Fenske of Winterhaven, FL. Contributions in his name may be sent to the First Unitarian Endowment Fund at 3701 Carlisle NE, Albuquerque 87110 or to the Trust Fund of Oliver L. and Louise R. Pembroke Memorial Scholarship Fund for the College of Education at UNM. On Sunday, January 15, 2006, a tree planting Memorial Service will take place at 12:20 at the First Unitarian Church.
