Obituary for ORTEGA

Robert I. Ortega (Bobby) passed away Tuesday, December 27, 2005 after a long illness. He was born on May 19, 1934 in Denver, CO. Robert was one of five children born to Jose Esteban Ortega and Rebecca Muniz Ortega. His parents were married on February 2, 1920 in Dawson, NM. In the 1940's the family settled in Albuquerque. Robert attended several Catholic schools in Denver and Albuquerque. He graduated from Albuquerque High in 1952. By that time he had fallen completely in love with the game of golf. It was a love that he pursued and nurtured for the rest of his life. He won the Albuquerque City Golf Championship in 1954. That same year, he represented New Mexico in the National Amateur Tournament in Detroit. He was an amateur member of the New Mexico Governor's Cup Team four times. After many years in the retail liquor business, he turned professional in 1986. He worked at Los Altos Golf Course as an Assistant Professional from 1986 until 1992. In April 1993, he became an assistant at Arroyo del Oso Golf Course. He remained there until illness forced his retirement. He achieved his Class A PGA Membership in April 1994. He remains a PGA Member in good standing. Robert is survived by Helen, his wife of 43 years; three loving children, Tisa, Tanya, R.J., and Ivy, R.J.'s beloved fiancee. Many of his happiest times were spent with his fantastic grandchildren, Sebastian, Kylie, and Aubrey. Memorial Rosary will be recited Tuesday, January 3, 2006, 7:00 p.m., at French Mortuary, Lomas Blvd. Chapel, 10500 Lomas Blvd. NE. Memorial Mass will be celebrated Wednesday, January 4, 2006, 10:00 a.m., at St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church, 1818 Coal Pl SE, 87106. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital, Tribute Memorial Dept. 501 St Jude Place, Memphis, TN, 38105.
