Lois Lynn Estes Taylor was born in Midland, TX on Monday, August 28, 1905, to Hiram Pembrooke "HI" Estes and Willie M. Daugherty. Lois attended school in Midland, TX and after graduating from Midland High School in 1923, she attended Midland Christian College. The family moved to Van Horn, TX, in 1915 to join her grandparents, Elisha Hamilton and Nancy Caroline Estes in ranch operations. Elisha Hamilton Estes was one of the first settlers in Midland moving there in 1886 with his family and continued in the ranching business with his son, HI, until his death. The family was active in the First Christian Church. Lois married Floyd Mayo and after his death married Ernest Taylor, who is also deceased. She had three children who all predeceased her; two sons, Billy Mayo and Douglas Taylor and a daughter, Ernalyn Taylor. Lois had two sisters, Carolyn Earl and Van Lee and one brother, Brooks. She lived the majority of her life in Van Horn, TX, other than a few years in El Paso, TX and most recently in New Mexico. Lois served for many years in an official capacity in Culberson County and later generously gave the City of Van Horn the land for the city water tower.
