Published in the Albuquerque Journal on Sunday December 11, 2005

Margaret Cartmell Bearce, our beloved Mother, Grandmother, Gran-Gran, and Great-Grandmother, passed gracefully, at the age of 92, Wednesday, December 7, 2005. Margaret's greatest joy was being with her three children: Ann, Sara and Steve, and their children. In keeping with Margaret's wishes, in lieu of a memorial service, her family gathered during her last days at Sara's home to remember her life. . . These times were filled with laughter, tears, more laughter and tears. . . just as Margaret wanted and loved, her family was together. Margaret left a legacy through the two books of memories and genealogic history dating back to forefathers arriving, prior to the American Revolution, and extending in time to the activities of her grandchildren and great grandchildren. Her prize-winning needlework was admired by many and treasured by her children. Mary Margaret Miller was born on July 29, 1913 in Mattoon, IL, the daughter of Floy Gilbert and Howard Eugene Miller who was County Superintendent of Highways. Margaret grew up on a farm and spent summers at her grandmother's where she and her sister would take a picnic basket where they played in the woods by White Creek which found its way to the Ohio River. Later her family moved to Mattoon. Her memory books are filled with memories of a rich community life and friends, many of whom she continued to see through the years. She graduated high school in 1931 and attended Christian College in Columbia, MO, graduating with a math degree. In 1937, the oil business arrived in Illinois. She met and married William Martin Cartmell, a geologist with Skelly Oil. His job was vital to the war effort in WWII. Two daughters, Margaret Ann Cartmell and Sara Cartmell were born in Illinois. In 1945, the family moved to Tulsa, OK, where a son Steven Gilbert Cartmell was born. Margaret's interest in travel and new experiences brought the family to New Mexico in the 1950s. She was preceded in death by William Martin Cartmell, in 1960. Margaret worked for the Coronado Credit Union, the UNM Physical Plant, and the First State Bank of Taos. In 1967, she married Albert Bearce. They spent many happy years living at the D.H. Lawrence Ranch in Taos, NM. She is survived by a sister, Mildred Richardson and her family of Illinois; her three children, Margaret Ann Swayze and spouse, Ben Swayze, of Waterboro, ME, Sara Pyeatt and spouse, Bob Pyeatt, of Albuquerque; Steven Cartmell and spouse, Judy Saavedra Cartmell of Albuquerque; her seven grandchildren: Eileen Krebs and spouse, Tom Krebs of Olathe, KS, Audrey Crawford of Aurora, CO, Paul Crawford and spouse, Noreen Sicat Crawford of Portland, ME, Alyssa Tapia and spouse, Alan Tapia of Albuquerque, Brett Bearce of Washington D.C., Travis Cartmell and spouse, Shanti Rutledge Cartmell of Glenwood Springs, CO, and Michael Cartmell of Albuquerque; her eight great-grandchildren, Jenna, Michelle, and Rene Crane, Anya Crawford, Taylor and Haley Tapia, Marcus Rutledge, and Noah "Tony" Cartmell. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to Ambercare Hospice at 5100 Indian School Rd. NE., Albuquerque, NM 87110, who greatly supported her and her family during Margaret's passing.
