Obituary for GRILLY

Published in the Albuquerque Journal on Sunday December 04, 2005

Juliamarie Andreen Grilly, 80, a resident of Los Alamos for the past 58 years, died Tuesday, November 29, 2005, in Los Alamos from complications of numerous illnesses. She was born February 6, 1925, in Des Moines, IA, the daughter of Dr. Paul and Althea Andreen. Her father was pastor at a Lutheran church. At the age of five, the family moved to Cokato, MN, where she grew up in a parsonage and graduated from high school as salutatorian in 1942. Julie loved the small town life and appreciated its closeness to Minneapolis with its big city advantages. For two years she attended Augustana College at Rock Island, IL, where her grandfather, Dr. Gustav Andreen, had been president of the college for over 30 years. She transferred to the University of Minnesota in 1946 and was granted a Bachelor's of Science Degree in bacteriology (now microbiology). For a year Julie worked as a medical technician for an internist in Mankato, MN. In 1947 she began work at the Biomedical Research Laboratory (now Los Alamos National Lab) doing histology, cytology, and autoradiography. Her specialty became photomicrography and she won several awards from the photographers association. She was also a subject in radiation experiments. She was widowed when her husband, Wright Langham was killed a plane crash in 1972. She married Edward Grilly in 1973, instantly becoming a mother and grandmother, which she enjoyed immensely. Julie was a music lover. She was very grateful to her mother for starting her on the cello. She played in the Augustana College Symphony, the University of Minnesota Symphony, the Rio Grande Symphony in Santa Fe, the Los Alamos Symphony and many chamber music groups. She has also performed in numerous light opera performances. Julie was an avid golfer, winning the Women's City Tournament in 1975. She served on the Board of the Los Alamos Golf Association, and became that association's first woman president. She also served as president of the Los Alamos Women's Golf Association. She served on the boards of the Northern New Mexico Symphony, the Los Alamos Symphony, the Los Alamos Community Concert Association, the Los Alamos Opera Guild, and the Los Alamos Historical Society. Julie also enjoyed bowling. One year her team had no sponsor, so they sponsored themselves, and won the city championship. Julie's last 25 years were different and difficult. On Thanksgiving Day of 1980, she suffered a spinal cord injury from a fall down a steep hill. The retirement that she and Ed had started early that year changed drastically. Her arms and legs were partially paralyzed. After vigorous rehabilitation, she could walk with crutches, then later with a wheeled walker. This meant no cello playing or golf. She struggled with any physical activity and suffered much pain, almost constantly near the end. Her mind remained bright and active. She kept busy working crossword puzzles, cheering up others with phone calls and cards, being a telephone caller for the Los Alamos Women's Golf Association and Los Alamos Republican Women, cooking good meals for Ed, and checking on his medical problems. She was a faithful Lutheran all of her life and was a member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Los Alamos. Julie was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Paul; and first husband, Wright Langham. She is survived by her husband, Edward; stepson, David Grilly of Seven Hills, OH; stepdaughter, Janice Carey of Lompoc, CA; step-grandchildren, Angela Grilly of Steamboat Springs, CO; Brian Carey of San Francisco, and Melinda Carey of El Segundo, CA; and cousins, Ann and Dwight Ericsson of Huntington, IN. Julie will be missed by them and all of her many friends. A Memorial Service will be conducted Friday, December 9, 2005, at 10:00 a.m., at Bethelehem Lutheran Church, 2390 North Road in Los Alamos. Graveside services will follow at Guaje Pines Cemetery in Los Alamos. Following the cemetery services, Edward invites all friends and family to join him at a reception at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of Berardinelli Family Funeral Service, 1399 Luisa Street, Santa Fe, NM 87505, 984-8600.
