Published in the Albuquerque Journal on Sunday December 04, 2005

Katherine Howard Clifton, 64, New Mexico artist and potter, died Sunday, November 28, 2005, from complications following heart surgery. Katherine was preceded in death by her parents, Frances and Harry Howard and her sister, Jilson. She is survived by her husband, Martin; her nephews, Glen Krause, Greg Krause, and Glen's children, Nona Olivia and Joshua Danfield. She was born on December 4, 1941 in New Iberia, LA, and was raised in Albuquerque where she graduated from Highland High School in 1959. After receiving a B.A. in English from the University of New Mexico in 1963, she moved to New York where her serious study as an artist began with painting. Moving three years later to the San Francisco Bay area, Katherine developed an interest in ceramics and became an original, admired potter - patterning into her glazes horse hair, natural grasses and herbs. She was also a home caregiver and hospital clerk during much of this period. She relocated to northern New Mexico in 1981 and built a studio and kiln in Rancho de Olguin on the Rio Vallecitos, subsequently returning home to Albuquerque and marrying her beloved husband, Martin in 1987. The Cliftons built their home in Placitas, NM in 1992, where Katherine renewed her painting, combined with a passion for gardening, horses, and travel. Her work was exhibited at New Mexico art fairs and sold to collectors and galleries across the country. Katherine was devoted to the work of the South Texas Children's Home (STCH) where non-adoptable children are provided with a nurturing environment and educational support through college. A Memorial Service was held at the family home on Saturday, December 3, 2005. In lieu of flowers, donations would be appreciated for this extraordinary institution, South Texas Children's Home, P.O.
