Lillian Haynie Page, age 91, a resident of Albuquerque, passed away on Saturday, October 15, 2005, at her home and surrounded by her loving family. Lillian was born in Albuquerque, on August 26, 1914 to Ethel McCrary Haynie and James Henry Haynie who met on a wagon train to New Mexico in the early 1900s. Her grandparents were Samuel and Tenny C. McCrary. Lillian attended school in New Mexico, Arizona, and California, graduating from high school in Fresno, CA. She attended Fresno State College for one year before transferring to the University of New Mexico, where she received her BA in 1935. Lillian received her MA from the University of California, Berkeley in 1938 and continued her education at the University of Virginia. Lillian first taught in a one-room schoolhouse in Mcgaffey, NM where she taught 39 children from grades 1 to 8. She later taught school in Gallup, New Mexico, California, Texas, Virginia, and Italy. Lillian became an Army wife in 1938 and was with her husband, Gordon Benjamin Page, and her oldest son, James, at Pearl Harbor when it was attacked on December 7, 1941. She traveled widely with her husband and five sons and especially enjoyed their four years living in Italy. There she learned to speak Italian, studied the accordion, and refined her Italian cooking, which she fondly pursued for the remainder of her life. She and her husband, Gordon B. Page, reared five sons, James Gordon Page, Michael Lynn Page, Christopher Lee Page, Lochlin Scott Page, and Jonathan Tolliver Page. In 1970, after Gordon's retirement as a Colonel in the regular Army Corps of Engineers, they returned to Albuquerque where Lillian became very active in the Senior Centers when Palo Duro first opened in 1974. She was a wife, mother, teacher, ceramicist, potter, weaver, knitter and affectionate role model. She loved her family dearly and the greatest joy of her life was being with them and her friends. She passed on her love of beauty, music, flowers and life to her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her son, Christopher, and her husband, Gordon. She is survived by four sons and daughters-in-laws, eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren, Willow, Pepper, and James.
