Obituary for HUME

Mary Helen Hume, 70, of Albuquerque, passed away Friday, October 7, 2005 at her home after a long battle with multiple sclerosis. She was born January 13, 1935, in Topeka, Kansas, and has been a resident of Albuquerque since 1994. She was preceded in death by her husband of 49 years, H. Richard Hume, on October 13, 2004, whom she dearly loved. Mary is survived by a son, James Hume and wife, Lynn of Albuquerque; daughters, Marcia Skurka and husband Bob, of Lowell, IN; Amie Hume of Albuquerque; and granddaughter, M'elen Skurka of Lowell, IN; a family friend, Sherrie Stangel of Edgewood; and thousands of former students that she also loved. She will also be missed by her cats, Geraldine and Gracie, and her dogs, Teddy and Ollie. She resided in El Paso from 1982 to 1994 and prior to that was a resident of Indianapolis, IN. She was a Professor of Medical Technology and the Associate Dean at the University of Texas-El Paso. She taught at Harvard, Stanford, and UCLA, and was a founder of the Indiana Vocational Technical College. Mary was always interested in the intellectual and professional development of her students. She enjoyed her interactions with all of her students bringing them many times into her home for special events and holidays. Before becoming ill, she traveled the world, enjoyed tennis and skiing. Memorial Mass will be held at 11:30 am on Tuesday, October 11, 2005, at the Risen Savior Catholic Community, with Father Richard Olona, Celebrant.
