Obituary for NELSON

R. Wayne Nelson, 93, died October 5, 2005, at Lawrence Memorial Hospital in Lawrence, KS. He was born February 24, 1912, in Zenith, KS, the son of Ross L. and Stella Forbes Nelson. He was a graduate of Spearville, Kansas High School, Southwestern State Teacher's College and completed his Master's Degree at the University of Kansas. Mr. Nelson taught music in western Kansas and moved to Lawrence in 1949, where he taught band and vocal music until 1965. He was the Director of Fine Arts for the Lawrence School District until 1976 when he retired. He was active in playing the piano for retirement homes and school class reunions until his death. He married Trena Perkins on March 16, 1931 in Oklahoma. She died in 1978. Survivors include two daughters, Kay Nelson Davis, Lawrence, KS, and Judith Nelson Greer, Albuquerque, NM; three grandchildren, Mike W. Davis, Kelly Schaumberg, and Courtney Brungardt, all of Lawrence; two step-grandchildren, Brandon Greer, New Market, MD, and Brett Greer, Albuquerque; eight great-grandchildren; and six stepgreat-grandchildren; three surviving sisters are Nellie Deeds, Fort Collins, CO, Carol Pearson, Vashon Island, WA, and Shirley Hilyard, Bowling Green, OH; A daughter, Sylvia Sue Nelson, died in infancy A private Graveside Servie will be held on Friday, October 7, 2005. The family will host a celebration of his life on Tuesday, October 11, 2005 from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. at Adams Alumni Center on the University of Kansas campus, 1266 Oread Avenue.
