Obituary for MILLER

Joseph Leon Miller, Sr., a resident of Albuquerque and originally from Charleston, SC, passed away Wednesday, September 28, 2005, surrounded by his loving family after a five-year battle with Multiple Sclerosis. Mr. Miller began his career in Army Corps of Engineers in 1957. He has served as the Principal Advisor to the Secretary, Department of the Interior for Native American Water Rights; Director, Native American Affairs Office, Bureau of Reclamation; Director, Division of Water and Land Technical Services, Bureau of Reclamation for the seventeen Western States; Project Manager, Albuquerque Area Office, Bureau of Reclamation; Director of Engineering Office and Acting Head of the Office of Science and Technology, Bureau of Reclamation, Washington, D.C. He was principal in developing and promulgating a national policy on Dam Safety in the United States; served as the Associate Director, Facilities Engineering Department, University of California San Diego, La Jolla, CA; Director, Facilities Engineering Department, Howard University, Washington, D.C.; and served in numerous other positions in Hawaii, New Mexico, Missouri, Nevada, and Montana. He was preceded in death by his parents, William Miller and Jennie King Miller. Mr. Miller is survived by his wife of 34 years, Linda Arviso-Miller; sons, Wayne Miller and wife, Patricia of South Carolina, Randy Miller and Glenn Eggleston of Emeryville, CA, Joseph Miller, Jr. and wife, Beverly of Albuquerque, and Raymond Miller of Bellingham, WA; and daughters, Vicky Miller of Fairfax, VA, Colette Grant of Albuquerque, and Nina Miller-Argent and husband, Drew Argent of Montgomery Village, MD; brother, Fred Miller; and sister, Thelma Dickinson; and a host of nieces and nephews. He is also survived by ten grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. Services will be held Friday, September 30, 2005, 10:30 a.m., at French Mortuary, 7121 Wyoming Blvd. NE. Interment will follow at 2:00 p.m. at Santa Fe National Cemetery, Santa Fe, NM. Friends may visit French Mortuary, Wyoming Blvd. Chapel, Friday from 9:30 a.m. to time of Service.
