Obituary for GRESS

Louis Adam Gress, age 85, died peacefully after an extended illness, in Sierra Vista, AZ, on September 5, 2005. Born in Jasper, IN, on April 11, 1920, Louie lived an active adventurous life, beginning with his Army induction at Fort Bennington, IN, in 1943. His distinguished military record included World War II service both in Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941 and the European Front. He was in the 82nd Airborne, Company C, 193rd Infantry where he made many combat jumps. He lived through the Battle of the Bulge and was wounded in action in Belgium. He received the Purple Heart, two Bronze Stars, and other medals. Louie was an architect-builder, working for many years at the University of New Mexico. His skill in construction was well known by colleagues and friends alike. Married in 1943 in Muskogee County, OK, he and his wife, Lorene celebrated 58 years of marriage until her death in 2001. After retirement, they spent many years together traveling the U.S. and living in Mexico. Louie is survived by his stepson, Billy Tippit, and his wife, Lucretia, of Albuquerque; nieces, Jeannine and Julie Melchoir of Indiana, Sue Merriman and several other nieces of Oklahoma. He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Minnie Gress; his brother, Francis; his sister, Eileen; and wife, Lorene. Services were held at the New Veterans Cemetery, in Fort Huachuca, Sierra Vista, AZ.
