Judge Cole was born on October 10, 1932 in Memphis, TN, to Reuben Echols and Elizabeth Patricia Cole. His family moved to New Mexico in 1935 for the construction of Conchas Dam. After graduating from Albuquerque High School, he earned a Civil Engineering degree from New Mexico State University in 1954. He practiced law with the Botts, Botts, and Mauney firm. He married the former Nancy Claire Mayland in 1964. In 1976, he was appointed to the Second Judicial District where he received both the respect of his colleagues and awards for his service. He was named Outstanding Judge of the Year by the Albuquerque Bar Association in 1984 and received the State Bar of New Mexico's Outstanding Judicial Service Award in 1986. After a brief relapse to private practice, he recovered and returned to the bench until he retired in 1997. That year he accepted a position as an administrative judge for the Social Security Administration, where he remained until he retired in June of this year. He was loved more than he knew, and he will be dearly missed. A Memorial Service will be held on Monday, August 22, at 3:00 p.m. at St. Mark's on the Mesa Episcopal Church, 431 Richmond Place NE. A reception at the church will follow the Service. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made in his memory to the Animal Humane Association of New Mexico, 615 Virginia SE, 87108 or to St. Mark's on the Mesa Episcopal Church.
