Obituary for TUCHFARBER

Published in the Albuquerque Journal on Thursday August 18, 2005

Edythe Marlene Tuchfarber, RN, EdD, 67, professor emerita of nursing at the University of New Mexico, passed away peacefully at home on Monday, August 15, 2005, with her beloved "Laddie" at her side. She was born October 17, 1937, in Keokuk, IA, to Edmund and Katheryn (nee Coffield) Tuchfarber, but the family made Los Alamos, NM, their home. In addition to receiving a diploma and bachelor's degree in nursing from St. Ambrose College in Davenport, IA, Edythe earned a master's degree in nursing from Marquette University, and a doctoral degree in education from the University of New Mexico. Edythe was preceded in death by her parents. She is survived by her sister, Kay Thurn; brothers, Bill Tuchfarber and Steve Tuchfarber; sister-in-law, Dee Tuchfarber; and many nieces, nephews, and loving friends. Edythe leaves behind a legacy of educating hundreds of nurses in New Mexico and Wisconsin during her 25+ years in academia. Her passion in teaching was Growth & Development and Pediatric Nursing. During her tenure at UNM, Edythe was an active member of the UNM community in such areas as the Faculty Senate, Faculty Senate Operations Committee, Budget Committee, Athletic Council, and BUS advisory council. She took special pride in being a member of nursing's honor society, Sigma Theta Tau International, and was actively involved in the local Gamma Sigma chapter prior to her retirement in 1996. When her health permitted, Edythe loved playing the piano and socializing at bridge. She could always be counted on for preparing her "famous fudge" when the need arose. She was also known for the afghans and baby blankets she lovingly knitted for family and friends. "Edythe, we were blessed having you in our lives, and will miss you. But we know you are now resting peacefully in the arms of your dear Savior." The family would like to thank Edythe's nurses, doctors, and other health care providers for their kindness and care. They would all probably agree that she was a teacher to the very end. In lieu of flowers, please send memorial contributions in Edythe's name to the College of Nursing Legacy Fund (c/o University of New Mexico Foundation, 700 Las Lomas NE, Suite 108, Albuquerque, NM 87131). A Rosary for Edythe will be recited at St. Jude Thaddeus Catholic Church 5712 Paradise Blvd NW, on Thursday, August 18, 2005, at 1:30 pm Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by Fr.
