Obituary for BENNETT

Polly Hummel Bennett (Mrs. George S.) died peacefully on Saturday, July 30, 2005. She was born to Miriam and Edgar Carroll Hummel on September 7, 1922 in Philadelphia, PA. She graduated from Marlborough School for Girls in Los Angeles and The University of California at Los Angeles with a degree in Drama and English. She was a member of the Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority and was active until her death. She was also a lifelong member of the Junior League. Polly married George S. Bennett Jr. in 1945. George preceded Polly in death in May of 2003. She is survived by her children: Margaret Lewis of Salt Lake City; Barbara Ritchie of Denver; Mary Anderson of Albuquerque; George Bennett III of Kailua-Kona, and Donald Bennett of Midland. She was the proud grandmother of ten grandchildren: Cynthia Lewis of Salt Lake City, Kelly McKane and Peter Hyer of San Francisco, Meghan and Jessica Anderson of Albuquerque, Benjamin Bennett of New York City, Samuel and Jesse Bennett of Kailua-Kona, and Brent and Belinda Bennett of Midland; as well as two great-grandchildren: Michael and Luke McKane of San Francisco. George and Polly had an illustrious career in the Navy, which included a nine-year post in Hawaii while George served as a submarine commander. She moved to Albuquerque with her family in 1962, and has been a resident and staunch supporter of the community and various organizations ever since. Over the years she was active in the Ko Shari Garden Club, The Council of Albuquerque Garden Clubs, The Old Glass Club, The Junior League of Albuquerque, and Kappa Kappa Gamma Alumni; and was currently serving on the board of directors of the Woodmark Residents Council and the Knife and Fork Club. She was a pillar of the St. Mark's on the Mesa Altar Guild. She and George were very active in the Albuquerque Tennis Club and Tanoan Country Club, where they enjoyed tennis, golf, and bridge with their many, many friends. Polly will always be remembered as a friend to all she met. Young and old will remember Polly as one who was always full of support and enthusiasm, and all appreciated her contagious positive attitude. Memorial Services will be held Saturday, August 13, 2005, at 10:00 a.m., at St. Mark's on the Mesa Episcopal Church, 431 Richmond Pl. NE.
