Obituary for BARKER

Dorothy Louise Barker passed away July 29, 2005. She was born in 1912, the daughter of Fred and Effie Bashe, in Seligman, MO, and raised in Monette, MO, and Tulsa, OK. She was graduated from Tulsa Central High School and established a beauty shop at her parents' home in that city. During World War II, she worked as a secretary in the office of the Commandant of the Marine Corps in Washington, D.C., where she met and married Lt. Albert B. Barker of Bethel, ME. After the war, the couple lived in Chicago, Denver, and Tulsa, OK before Albert rejoined the Army as a career officer. During his time in the Army, the couple lived at Fort Gordon, GA; various U.S. installations in Japan, Seattle and Fort Lewis, WA; and in northern Virginia. They settled in Albuquerque at Albert's retirement. He died in 2000 and is buried at Santa Fe National Cemetery. She is survived by her children; Mitchell Barker and Christine Rocha; and her grandchildren, Tami Towell and Jeremy Barker; all of Albuquerque. Raised in poverty during the Depression, she contributed to Allied victory over the Axis powers. She provided a stable home for her husband and raised two children to be contributing and law-abiding citizens. It is not just the celebrated and the powerful who make a nation great.
