Obituary for MONTOYA

Arsenio (Archie) Montoya, age 86, died Wednesday evening, June 22, 2005 at the home of his son in Albuquerque. The Rosary will be recited at 7:30 p.m., Sunday evening, June 26, 2005. The Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m., Monday, June 27, 2005. Burial will follow in the Portales Cemetery. His seven sons will serve as pallbearers. Mr. Montoya was born June 27, 1918 in Romeroville, NM to the home of Maria and Isidro Montoya. He grew up in the Las Vegas, NM area where he lived until 1961. On May 5, 1935 in Las Vegas, he was married to Margaret "Maggie" Armijo. During World War II he served in the Army. While living in Las Vegas, he worked in the oil fields as a truck driver and later for the City of Las Vegas as a Police Officer. In 1961, he moved to Portales, NM and was employed by Borden Peanut Co. and also Williams Peanuts. For several more years, he worked at the Selected Casings Plant. In 1980 he moved to Las Vegas. For several years he was employed as a night clerk at El Fidel Hotel. He was a member of the Senior Citizens in Las Vegas. He enjoyed playing poker and watching wrestling matches. As a young man he liked riding horses. He was a very good dancer, and had even won a first place in a fiesta dance contest. He was a faithful member of the Catholic Church. He is survived by seven sons and four daughters-in-law, Arsenio Montoya, Jr., Tommy and Alice Montoya, David and Cecilia Montoya, Robert and Lupe Montoya and Joe Montoya all of Portales, Rudy and Imelda Montoya of Odessa, TX, and Miguel Montoya and his fiance, Priscilla Romero of Albuquerque; four daughters and sons-in-law, Gloria and Manuel Archuleta and Mary Lou and Jake Lucero, all of Las Vegas, NM, Beatrice and Jake Lopez of Portales and Geraldine and David Gallegos of Albuquerque; 43 grandchildren including one especially devoted grandson, Ernest Gutierrez; 77 great-grandchildren; and 25 great-great-grandchildren; a sister, Angie Tapia of Portales and his faithful Chihuahua, Milagro. He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Leopoldo and two others who died as infants; three sisters, Adela Armijo, Martina Montoya and Petra Gomez; a son, Ernest Montoya; a daughter, Lucille Gutierrez; a grandchild; and by his wife, Maggie, who died August 27, 1971.
