His persistence, desire to serve and determination to succeed earned him the rank of Lieutenant Commander. He resided in Albuquerque at 3 different times the 1940s, 1950s, and located here permanently in June of 1968. Though his lifetime accomplishments were many, what he was best known for was his generosity and gratitude for those who extended kindness toward him and his family. He was sometimes referred to as the "turtle man" because he presented boxes of "turtles" candy as a token of his appreciation. There are many health care personnel of the Veteran's Hospital, the employees of his favorite restaurants and friends will greatly miss the sweetness of his gratitude.
