Obituary for LAYTON

Douglas Kent Layton, Sr. flew his final flight on May 18, 2005. Doug was born October 10, 1934 in Ft. Worth, TX to Otwell and Margaret Layton. He is survived by his loving wife of 21 years, Mayla Jane Layton of Albuquerque; brother, Ace Layton of Ft. Worth, TX; daughter, Elizabeth Gonzales of Santa Fe; daughter, Lurette Balkcom and husband, Keith, of Albuquerque; son, Doug Layton, Jr. and wife, Terri, of Clearwater, FL; daughter, Laura Smoot and husband, Brad, of Albuquerque. He is also survived by seven grandchildren - Jennifer and Jeffrey Gonzales; Christopher, Jacob and Dejah Emerson; and Andrew and Robert Smoot; a nephew, Asa Layton, Jr. of Houston, TX; ex-wife, Lynn Layton of Albuquerque, and two stepsons, Chuck and Richard Lence. Doug was preceded in death by his parents and granddaughter, Danielle Smoot. Doug was an avid Radio Control Airplane enthusiast and was an active member of the ARCC club. Doug had a keen sense of humor and would agree with Winston Churchill in that, "I am ready to meet my Maker. Whether my Maker is prepared for the great ordeal of meeting me is another matter." Cremation has already taken place. Memorial Services will be held at St. Stephen's United Methodist Church located at 4601 Juan Tabo NE on June 4 at 11:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, Doug's family is requesting that donations be made to the American Cancer Society, In Memory of Doug Layton, 10501 Montgomery NE, Suite 300, ABQ, NM 87111.
