Obituary for ROBINS

Published in the Albuquerque Journal on Tuesday May 10, 2005

Sue Margolis Robins born November 5, 1922- died May 7, 2005. Sue was born to Claribel and Harry Margolis on Nov. 5, 1922 in Dayton, Ohio. She was a member of the last graduating class at Dayton's Steele High School. Sue went to Ohio State University and majored in Sociology. She was introduced to Mel Robins on her first night in college. He was taken by her smile and they were together throughout college. She graduated Summa Cum Laude in 1944 and was a member of Phi Beta Kappa. In Feb. 1945, Sue Margolis married Melvin Robins. Two daughters, Joan and Jacquelyn were born in Ohio where Mel began his law practice and the family moved to New Mexico in 1951. Sue devoted her life then to raising two children, leading a Brownie then Girl Scout Troup, volunteering at St. Joseph's Hospital and being active in the Jewish community. She passionately believed in helping people less fortunate and often said "There but for the grace of God go I". She was always collecting clothes and food, visiting sick friends, and raising money for Jewish and other charities. When her children went off to college, she went to work at the N.M Welfare Department as a caseworker. She was very generous with her resources and offered her home to several clients for their weddings and her husband's services for legal problems. She also believed in and worked for women's rights along with her daughters. Her second career as a travel agent matched her love of travel. She enjoyed trips with her husband to Europe, especially Italy, Israel, New York and San Francisco for the opera and to all sorts of family occasions. She also battled what is now known as bipolar disorder for the last forty years and in recent years began to suffer from Alzheimer's disease. However, when she was feeling good, and that was much of the time, she was the most outgoing, friendly person around---introducing herself to whomever she was sitting beside, at the symphony, art exhibits, parties which she liked to give and attend. Doing for your family and helping others were the values that guided her life. As one clerk at Duran's Pharmacy, where the family always met for lunch on Saturdays, said "When I dislocated my shoulder, she and her husband came to my house." Many sincere thanks to Dr. David Peters, Dr. Ricardo Ortega, the wonderful staff at The Cottages and Zia Hospice. Please make any contribution to Congregation Albert, 3800 Louisiana NE, Albuquerque 87110 or the Alzheimer's Association, 9500 Montgomery NE, Alb. 87111. Graveside Funeral Services will be held at Congregation Albert Cemetery at Fairview Memorial Park, 700 Yale SE on Tuesday, May 10 at 11 a.m. with Rabbi Joseph Black and Cantor Barbara Finn officiating .
