Obituary for PARKER

Published in the Albuquerque Journal on Sunday February 06, 2005

Florence Fisher Parker died on February 5, 2005, in her home. She was 64 years old. Flo was born in Houston, TX on July 31, 1940. The most important thing in Flo's life was her family, her husband, Senior United States District Judge James A. Parker; daughter Pamela Jones and husband, Dave of Broomfield, CO; and son, Roger Parker and wife, Dee Dee of Cherry Hills, CO. Of special joy were her grandchildren, Wesley Parker Jones - ten, Kelsey Michelle Jones - nine, Melinda Grace Jones - seven, James Anthony Parker - seven, Sarah Elizabeth Rene Parker - six, Emily Catherine Parker - four, and Daniel Joseph Parker - two. Her parents were Mildred Ogg and Peter William Fisher. She is also survived by her brother, Bruce Fisher and wife, Carol of Houston, TX; sister, Alice Fisher Smith of Bryan, TX; sister-in-law, Beverly Parker Weaver, of New York City, NY; nieces, Lisa Cunningham, Ashley Smith, Jonelle Furmark; and nephew, Bruce Fisher, Jr. Flo's friends throughout the community and the U.S. enriched her life immeasurably. She was overwhelmed by the outpouring of love during her prolonged illness. When asked, "What do you do?" Flo's first answer was that she was a wife, mom, and homemaker and that her second career was being a volunteer. She was involved in many community activities and loved her service with others. She had a long association with the Junior League of Albuquerque and served on many committees and as President in 1978-79. The first volunteer group she ever joined was the New Mexico Symphony Guild in 1967. That began a very long association with the New Mexico Symphony Orchestra. After being the chairperson of many committees, including Young People's Concerts, Senorita Activities, Long Range Planning, Nomination, and the Symphony Ball Auction, she served as President of the Symphony Guild. She was a member of the Board of the New Mexico Symphony Orchestra for many years, serving as President Elect and on the Executive Committee. In 1991, because of her long involvement with the New Mexico Symphony, she was appointed to the Volunteer Council of the American Symphony Orchestra League (ASOL) and served as the ASOL National Conference Chairperson and President of the Council and as a director on the Board of the ASOL. Her greatest enjoyment was making close friendships with other council members from throughout the country. Flo served on many community boards including the Albuquerque Museum Foundation Board, the Albuquerque Youth Commission, Friends of the Albuquerque Public Library, Presbyterian Hospital Auxiliary and Foundation Board, Albuquerque Goals Committee, March of Dimes, Music of Albuquerque Festival, and the Ronald McDonald House Board. For a number of years, Flo was a professional model and worked part-time coordinating style shows and as a fashion consultant. She loved to travel and she visited numerous places around the United States and the world. Flo also loved entertaining and hosted many parties in her beautiful home. Flo was also very active in sports and exercise. She walked daily, played tennis, and lifted weights. Flo attended Rice University where, at the age of 18, she met her husband of 44 years, Judge Jim Parker. They were married in 1960. Flo then moved to Austin where Jim was attending law school, and she graduated from the University of Texas with a Bachelor of Arts degree in languages. Flo and Jim moved to Albuquerque in 1962. A memorial service will be held Tuesday, February 8, 2005, 1:30 p.m., at St. John's Episcopal Cathedral, 318 Silver SW. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the New Mexico Symphony Orchestra, the Albuquerque Museum or the charity of your choice. French Mortuary 1111 University Blvd. NE 843-6333
