Bennie Maes January 24, 1924 - January 18, 2005 A resident of Los Alamos from 1946 until 1993 and Albuquerque since 1993, passed away at the Veteran's Memorial Hospital in Albuquerque on January 18, 2005. He is survived by his wife, Rose, children: Ben Maes, Gloria McAteer and Husband, Dennis, Becky Michelsen and husband, Randy, Mike Maes and wife, Sandra, Guiguite Yett and husband, Robert, Frank Maes and wife, Laurie, Steve Maes and wife, Julie, Bob Maes and wife, Trish, Martha Waters, Charlie Maes and Val Gomez; daughter-in-law, Linda Maes; grandchildren: Lisa Maes Stark, Nicole Maes-Keating, Roy McAteer, Torii King Jenkins, Nathan King, Ian Maes, Simone Maes Edwards, Angie Maes, Marisa Maes, Natalie Maes, Jesse Maes, Britney Maes, Meghan Maes, and Savannah Waters. He also is survived by ten great-grandchildren; four step-children: Judy McGurn, Elaine Vigil, Larry Maestas, Art Maestas; 13 step-grandchildren; and 16 step-great-grandchildren; as well as many nieces and nephews. Bennie was preceded in death by Marguerite Maes, his beloved wife of 46 years; brother, Frank Maes; son, Joseph; grandson, Aaron Maes; and son-in-law, Joe King. He was a WWII Veteran and served in the Army infantry in the European Theater. He was awarded the European-African-Middle Eastern Service Medal with 3 Bronze Stars and a Purple Heart with Oak Leaf Cluster. He worked for the Zia Company in Los Alamos from 1946 until his retirement in 1986. An avid sports enthusiast and participant, Bennie excelled in basketball in high school and played semi-pro baseball. He was a member of the American Legion and participated in the American Legion Baseball Program. He was actively involved in the LAHS Boosters Club. He was also an accomplished golfer and continued to play throughout his life. The Rosary will be at St. Anne Church, 511 Alicia St, in Santa Fe on Friday, January 21, 2005 at 7:00 p.m. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, January 22, 2005 at 11:00 a.m. at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church, 3700 Canyon Rd, in Los Alamos. Interment will be at the Santa Fe National Cemetery at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, January 24, 2005. Honorary pallbearers are his sons: Ben, Mike, Frank, Steve, Bob, and Charlie Maes. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to be made in memory of Bennie Maes to the New Mexico VA Health Care System (NMVAHCS), Unit 4D Comfort Services, 1501 San Pedro Blvd. SE, Albuquerque, NM 87108.
