Obituary for HANCOCK

Dee Hancock, 92, died peacefully at home on January 7, 2005. She was preceded in death by her husband of 45 years, W. Lee Hancock and a granddaughter, Sarah Marin Lenz. She is survived by daughter, Jerri D. Hancock and granddaughter, Erika Lenz. Dee was born in 1912 in Poteau, OK, the fourth of five children, to Lily & Lemuel Durden. After graduating high school, she moved to Atlanta, where she put herself through college at Emory University by working as a secretary at the Federal Bureau of Investigations. In 1941, she married Lee, who was a special agent in the FBI. They settled in Albuquerque in 1955 and lived for many years in Corrales. Dee taught 3rd grade and was active in adult literacy and tutoring children to read. She volunteered her time to many civic projects, was a patron and supporter of several local artists, and traveled extensively around the world with her husband. She also had an avid interest in Asian gardening and created an authentic Zen garden at her residence, which she shared with many people. She will be fondly remembered for her inquisitive mind, independent spirit, and accumulated wisdom. Cremation will take place. Private interment will be held at Gate of Heaven Cemetery.
