Paul J. Chernek, 56, a resident of Albuquerque for 18 years, died Wednesday, January 5, 2005. He is survived by his daughter, Tracy Chernek, serving on active duty in the U.S. Army, stationed at Ft. Drum, NY. He received numerous medals and awards for his outstanding work in the field of Theoretical Laser Optical Physics. Throughout his career Major Chernek worked on the space program. He taught Physics at the U.S. Air Force Academy. Major Chernek worked at Air Force Weapons Laboratory, Kirtland Air Force Base. Major Chernek attended Farleigh Dickinson University, The Pennsylvania State University, The University of Arizona, The University of Sendai and The University of Tokyo in Japan, and The Air Force Institute of Technology to study physics and astronomy. He received the Air Force Commendation Medal with one device, Meritorious Service Medal with one device, Air Force Longevity Service Award with three devices, Air Force Training Ribbon, National Defense Service Medal, Small Arms Expert Marksmanship Ribbon/Pistol, Air Force Organizational Excellence Award. Cremation has taken place and Memorial Services will be held Tuesday, 10:00 a.m., at French Mortuary, University Blvd. Chapel, with Chaplain Lemuel M. Boyles, U.S.A.F. (Ret.) officiating.
