Obituary for CASWELL

Gloria Jean (Pacheco) Caswell, 60, of Albuquerque, NM, passed away at 10:45 p.m. Tuesday, December 28, 2004, after a brief battle with cancer. She was in the able care of the Gibson Lovelace Medical Center at the time of her death. Her passing was peaceful and without pain. With her at the time of her death were her husband, other members of her immediate family, and many friends, relatives, and coworkers. Gloria had recently completed 25 years of service with the United States Government, serving with the Department of Interiors' Indian Arts and Crafts Board and the Bureau or Indian Affairs during that period. At the time of her death she was serving as the secretary of the Division of Real Estate Services of the Bureau's Southwest Regional Office at 1001 Indian School Road, NW in Albuquerque. She was born in Winslow, AZ, into the Roadrunner/Small Corn Clan of the Laguna Tribe. After her family returned To Paguate, NM, she attended school in Grants, NM, graduating high school in 1962. She then attended Haskell Indian College in Lawrence, KS, graduated, and then moved to Washington, DC, where she began work with the Federal Government and met her husband, Robert Caswell. After their 1965 marriage in a Lutheran Church four blocks east of the United States Capitol Building, Gloria and her Husband, who served in the US Army as a medical technician, lived at various military installations in the US until his honorable discharge in 1967. Gloria and Robert returned to Albuquerque, where they have resided ever since. Gloria's hobbies included bowling, golfing, sewing, and cooking for her beloved and loving family. Because of her life-long love of housecats, she eventually she became universally known as "Catswell." Gloria was preceded in death by her parents, Robert Pacheco Sr. and Lean Pacheco; brother, Robert Pacheco Jr; and sister, Daisy Frazier. Surviving her are her husband; sons, Benjamin and James, all of Albuquerque; brother, Gilbert Pacheco of Casa Blanca NM; sister, Eleanor Starr of Grapevine TX; and many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and in-laws. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Laguna Rainbow Elder Center Corporation /Foundation, c/o Kathy Correa, PO Box 290, Casa Blanca, NM 87007, in memory of Gloria. A wake will be held Thursday, December 30, at the family dwelling in Paguate, NM, beginning at 2:00 p.m. There will be a graveside service and burial at 10 a.m. on Friday, December 31, at the Paguate Cemetery. The family thanks all of those who touched Gloria's life, those who loved her and held her dear, and all who participated in her selfless devotion to the well-being of Native Americans and all peoples. We also thank those who participated in helping her move to a higher level, both by participation in her parting ceremonies in person and by being with her in spirit. We thank you all.
