Obituary for MAES

Gilbert E. Maes, Sr., 83, of Albuquerque, passed away on December 16, 2004 after losing a battle to cancer. He was born on March 11, 1921, in Maes, NM to J.D. Maes, Sr. and Efren Varela Maes. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Frank A. Maes. He is survived by his daughters, Coralee Ortega and husband, George of Casa Grande, AZ; Barbara Maes, Geraldine Sena and husband, Jim; and son, Gilbert Maes, Jr., all of Santa Fe; grandchildren, Steven Kloeppel and wife, Christine of Chandler, AZ, MSgt. Kevin Kloeppel and wife, Alison of Fort Walton Beach, FL, Beverly Maes of Kirkland, WA; Janelle Reinig and husband, Will of Albuquerque; and James Sena and Maria Candelaria of Rio Rancho, NM; great grandchildren, twins, Kyle and Wyatt Kloeppel and Wesley Reinig; sisters, Margaret Collins of San Pablo, CA, Edwina Schubert and husband, Alfred of Albuquerque; brothers, J.D. Maes Jr., and wife, Mari, Antonio Maes, Leo Maes and wife, Annette, all of Albuquerque, Carlos Maes of Santa Fe, and Mike Maes and wife, Gisela of Jackson, CA; special niece, Phyllis Schubert; many other special nieces, nephews, friends, and neighbors; including his barber of 40 years, Art Garcia of Santa Fe. Mr. Maes was a World War II veteran, having served with the Air Transport Command. He retired from the Zia Company in Los Alamos, NM, as a purchasing supervisor after 38 years of service. He was a devoted father and grandfather. His family will cherish the memories of his remarkable courage and faith. Special thanks to his caretakers, Barbara Hernandez and Carrie Davila. Visitation will be Sunday, December 19, 2004, 4:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m., followed by a Rosary at 6:00 p.m., at French Mortuary, Lomas Blvd. Chapel, 10500 Lomas Blvd. NE. Mass will be celebrated Monday, December 20, 2004, 12:00 noon, at Our Lady of the Assumption Catholic Church, Lomas at Tennessee. Interment will follow at 3:00 p.m. at Santa Fe National Cemetery.
