Published in the Albuquerque Journal on Wednesday December 15, 2004

Caesar (C.R.). After 97 years of a remarkable and fulfilling life, Caesar (C.R.) Sebastian, cherished father of Ann, has joined his beloved wife, Louise, who pre-deceased him in 1993. He passed away on December 12, 2004, of age-related causes. Born December 27, 1906 in Trinidad, Colorado, Mr. Sebastian was the fourth child in a family of 13. His parents, Virginia Ciccone and Charles Sebastian immigrated from Italy in the 1890s and settled on a large farm east of Trinidad. Later, when the family moved to Raton, Caesar attended and graduated from Raton High School as Valedictorian of his class, and went on to receive a Bachelor's in Business Administration from the University of Colorado, Boulder. While there he was a member and President of Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity, a member of the Colorado Marching Band and Phi Beta Kappa. While in Boulder, he was also a member of the Colorado National Guard. In 1931, he moved to Santa Fe where he worked as the Assistant State Comptroller. He met and married Louise Josephine Gross, a Missouri native who was visiting Santa Fe, in 1934, and they had one daughter, born 1937. Subsequently, Sebastian was appointed State Comptroller by then-Governor John E. Miles, beginning what was to be a long and distinguished career with the State of New Mexico in several different capacities and at the behest of Governors Miles, Dempsey, Campbell, Mabry and King, among others. He was a 63-year member of Lions Clubs International where he served as president and treasurer, as well as longtime involvements with Toastmasters Club, the National Society of Public Accountants, where he served as President, and the National Association of Auditors, Comptrollers and Treasurers as First Vice President. A C.P.A., Caesar established a private accounting firm that thrived in both Santa Fe and Albuquerque for many years, finally closing in 2004. His lifelong love of gardening, his many friendships, and his fiercely independent spirit sustained him to the end.
