Obituary for PARKER

Alfred (Al) L. Parker, Ph.D., passed away on December 13, 2004 following a lengthy illness. Al was born in Oklahoma City, OK on March 9, 1935 and was raised in Ponca City, OK. Al is survived by his wife of 49 years, Judy; daughter, Kathy Darwin and husband, Ben; son, Rob Parker and wife, Tammie; four beautiful grandchildren, Jamie Parker, Paige Darwin, Jason Parker and Alex Darwin; brother, James M. Parker and wife, Linda of Albuquerque; sister, Jane Irwin and husband, Stan of Greencastle, IN; and three nephews and their families. Dr. Parker was preceded in death by his parents, Evelyn and Robert A. Parker; and brother, Robert A. Parker, Jr. Al was graduated from Oklahoma State University with both a Bachelors and Masters degrees, and the Ohio State University with a Doctor of Philosophy in Economics. He was a professor at University of New Mexico for over thirty years. He served as chairman of the Department of Economics for nine years. Giving every person a chance to get an education was one of his goals in life. He was an outstanding athlete, playing basketball during high school and at Oklahoma State University. His other passion was golf, which he enjoyed with his many friends, never wanting to just play but to be the best. Al was an avid Lobo fan having both football and basketball tickets for 40 years. His family was the most important part of his life. Not only in teaching their children and grandchildren how to live and how to achieve their goals but watching and coaching them in their many activities. Cremation has taken place and memorial services will be held Friday, 2:00 p.m., at Eastern Hills Baptist Church, 3100 Morris NE, with Pastor Larry Miller officiating. The family requests donations be made to the Alfred L. Parker, Ph.D. Scholarship Fund, University of New Mexico Foundation to support a student in Economics to continue their studies. Al also supported the many projects of Assistance League, especially their program to provide students with new appropriate school clothing.
