Berniece Harris Skousen, 99, of Temple, died Wednesday, December 8, 2004 at her residence. Berniece was born June 7, 1905 to Drucilla Lanford and Jim Mordecai in Aubry, Texas. Mr. Mordecai, a building contractor, moved his family to Clovis, New Mexico where he was active building public buildings and homes. Berniece graduated from Clovis High School and later married her childhood sweetheart, Jake H. Harris who died in 1948. She later married Mr. Nate Skousen, who also preceded her in death. Berniece was also preceded in death by a granddaughter, Felicia Ellis. Berniece belonged to the Albuquerque Country Club and the First Presbyterian Church, where she served as a Deacon. She was for many years on the board of the All Faiths Receiving Home. She also served as a Housemother for sororities at the University of Texas, Texas A&M, Boulder, Colorado, University of Kansas and the University of New Mexico. Berniece moved to Temple, Texas to be near her family. She was a member of the First Baptist Church, the City Federation Women's Club, and the Arno Art League. Survivors include her daughter, Phyllis Ellis and her husband, Paul; two granddaughters, June Ellis Cuming and husband, Dr. Reid Cuming of Houston, Texas and Debbie Frazee and her husband, Dr. Richard Frazee of Abilene, Texas; six great-grandchildren, Reid, Colin, and Cameron Cuming, and Katie, Paul, and Jack Frazee. Funeral Services were held Saturday, December 11, 2004 at First Baptist Church in Temple, Texas. Graveside Services will be held at Sunset Memorial Park, 924 Menaul NE, Tuesday, December 14, 2004 at 11:00 a.m., Reverend Myron White officiating. Memorial contributions may be made to the New Mexico Boys and Girls Ranch, 6209 Hendrix Rd. NE, Albuquerque, NM 87110.
