Obituary for IHDE

Daniel Carlyle Ihde, M.D., physician and medical researcher, died on Thursday, December 9 at Sandia Springs Retirement Center in Rio Rancho, New Mexico, after a long illness. He was 61 years old. Dr. Ihde was born in Parsons, KS, the son of Martha and Ira C. Ihde, and grew up in Portales, NM. He graduated from Eastern New Mexico University in 1964 with a degree in mathematics. He was a reporter for the Portales News Tribune during his college years. He earned his medical degree from Stanford University Medical School in 1969. He then served as intern and first year resident at The New York Hospital followed by a residency and fellowship in medical oncology at Memorial-Sloan Kettering Hospital, also in New York City. Dr. Ihde's career at the National Cancer Institute spanned 21 years, from 1973 to 1994. During this time he served as Director of the Division of Hematology and Oncology at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences in Bethesda, Maryland; Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of the National Cancer Institute; and held several professorships in medicine. He was Deputy Director of the National Cancer Institute from 1991 to 1994. In addition, Dr. Ihde authored or co-authored over 100 articles published in various medical journals, as well as chapters for several medical textbooks. He was Chief of Oncology at the Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis from 1994-1997. Dr. Ihde made many seminal observations regarding lung cancer and its treatment. He first reported on the role of drug combinations for the treatment of both small cell and non-small cell cancers as early as 1976. He was an inspiration as a teacher and taught many of the thought leaders in lung cancer who are active in the field today. Dr. Ihde received a number of awards over the years, including the Stanford Medical Alumni Research Award, the Eastern New Mexico University Outstanding Alumni Award, the U.S. Public Health Service Commendation Medal, the National Institutes of Health Merit Award, and the Bristol-Myers Squibb Award for Excellence in Lung Cancer Research. He was active in the American Society of Clinical Oncology, the International Association for the Study of Lung Cancer, and the American Association for Cancer Research, traveling to many world conferences where he was known for his fine presentations and incisive questions. He married Mary Katherine Nanninga in 1968. In addition to his wife and mother, he is survived by his son, Steven of San Francisco; son, Douglas of Palo Alto, CA; and sister, Charlotte J. Kiger of Modesto, CA; and her two children. Funeral services will be held on Monday, December 13 at 2 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church in Portales, NM followed by burial at the Portales Cemetery.
