Obituary for WHELAN

James W. Whelan of Albuquerque died on Wednesday, December 1, 2004 in his home at the age of 88. He was born in Mondovi, WI on December 15, 1915 to Judd and Shirley Whelan. The last of their seven children, he earned his Masters Degree from West Texas University and taught Geography and Math in Bovina, TX and Farmington, NM. He retired in 1978 and moved to Albuquerque. He traveled around the world, and extensively in Europe, the British Isles, Australia and South America. He served in the Army during World War II. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Geraldine; two sons, Larry Whelan of Temple City, CA, and Michael Whelan of Bozeman, MT; a daughter, Beverly Whelan of Albuquerque; seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. He was a Mason for over 50 years and was active in the St. Stephens United Methodist Church for 25 years. He was well liked and respected by all who knew him. A Memorial service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, December 18 at St. Stephens, 4601 Juan Tabo Blvd. NE. A private graveside service will follow at Santa Fe National Cemetery.
