Obituary for SOYBEL

Published in the Albuquerque Journal on Friday October 01, 2004

Anita Croog Soybel, born October 9, 1930 in New Haven, CT to Rose S. and Harry I. Croog, passed from this world September 28, 2004 after a short illness. She is survived by her children, Beth Porter, M.D. and husband, Allan of Albuquerque; Col. Laurence Soybel, USAF (JAG), wife, Anne; grandsons, Michael and Geoffrey of Stafford, VA; and son, Josh Soybel, wife, Trish and grandchildren, Jamison and Alexandria, currently of Singapore. She also leaves two sisters: Geraldine Geyer of West Hartford, CT and Kaila Margolis of Hamden, CT. She was preceded in death by her husband, Erwin Soybel, formerly of Hamden, CT; and special niece, Leslie Geetter of Simsbury, CT. After raising their family in Hamden, CT, Anita and Ernie traveled extensively around the world, including 10 years in Europe working for NATO civilian services. Upon returning to the States, they retired to Albuquerque in 1990. Anita was very active in a number of volunteer organizations in Albuquerque, including her time as a docent at the Indian Pueblo Cultural Center. Anita also became active in her Synagogue, Congregation Albert. She became very interested and conversant on the history of the Jewish People in New Mexico. This included the study of historical documents regarding the diaspora in the Southwest, and the verbal histories of converso Jews in the local area. Anita was an avid reader, a connoisseur of newspaper clippings from the New York Times (front-to-back every day), and shared them with her family and friends in order to keep them as current as she. She was a true aficionado of the written menu, and a self- styled and widely acknowledged gourmet cook. Her love for animals was unmatched, and she provided homes to several rescued pit-bulls during her life. Anita had a sharp sense of humor, always appreciative of a joke, pun or a light moment, and this will surely be missed. Anita leaves behind memories, friends, and loving family. She touched all of us in so many ways that they are truly too numerous to count. Her family wishes to thank the medical and surgical teams of the University of New Mexico Hospital, including the 5W professional staff for their compassionate care during her final days. Private services for the immediate family will be held at the Congregation Albert Cemetery at Fairview Memorial Park in Albuquerque, New Mexico. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Anita's name to a cancer research charity, or animal humane society of your choice.
