Shelby, Adelina "Lena Baca". Lena died Tuesday, September 21, 2004. She was born in Belen, NM on November 11, 1912 to Saturnino Baca and Dora Chavez Baca. Lena was the second to last of nine children. Her father was a prominent figure in Belen, having been the 1st Superintendent of Schools in Valencia County. He was also owner and publisher of El Espano Americano and the Belen News. Lena too was an educator, she taught school at the Belen Grade School and retired after 30 years. She married Leo J. Shelby after her retirement on April 5, 1968. He preceded her in death on September 21, 1998, after 30 years of marriage. Lena was also preceded in death by her brothers and sisters, Herman G., Elfego G., Mary B. Romero, Eddie A., Dennis F., Buelah B. Read, Ernest Baca and Gilbert H. Baca. She is survived by many nieces and nephews. Lena was a member of the Roman Catholic Church, The Catholic Daughters of America and the Retired Teachers Association. Memorial Mass will be celebrated Monday, September 27, 2004, at 10:00 a.m., at Immaculate Conception Church, 6th and Copper SW. Interment will follow at Mt. Calvary Cemetery.
