Obituary for OSTRANDER

Lurl Stillman Ostrander, 79, born March 6, 1925 in Maricopa, Kern Co, CA, died on June 20, 2004 in Allegheny General Hospital, Pittsburgh, PA. He was preceded in death by his parents Lurl Sr. and Irma Leona (Dorn) Ostrander; brothers, Dr. Charles and William Ostrander. He enlisted in the Marine Corps during WWII at the age of 17 and served in the Pacific and aboard the carrier U.S.S. Essex with VMF124, a Marine Corsair Squadron. He earned a B.A. in Petroleum Geology from Fresno State College and taught elementary school in Five Points, CA for 3 years. He was recruited and served as a Special Agent with the F.B.I, in Washington D.C., New York City, Detroit, Milwaukee, and Appleton, WI. He resigned from the Bureau and went to work at Lawrence Radiation Lab. and Sandia National Lab. In Livermore, CA and transferred to Albuquerque in 1974 as supervisor of the Library Operations and Classification Division. He retired in 1982. Lurl is survived by his wife, Clara; daughters, Kerry Ostrander, Deborah Russell and husband, James; Clara's son, Jeff Gearhart and wife, Phyllis; and six grandchildren, Maggie Russell, Gilbert Russell and wife, Natalie, and Jeffrey, Sam, and Anna Gearhart. He is also survived by brother, John Ostrander and wife, Debbie; and sister, Lurlene; as well as many nieces and nephews. He left behind his faithful companion, Barney, a yellow Lab who had shared his life and his cookies for a year and a half. He was a 32d Scottish Rite Freemason and a member if Las Palmas Ponderosa Lodge 366 in Fresno, the Ostrander Family Assn. and the Albuquerque Genealogical Assn., the Society if Former Special Agents of the FBI, and the National Rifle Assn. Lurl was interred in PA with Masonic rites and military honors. A celebration of his life will be celebrated at 2:30 p.m. on August 2, 2004 at Heights First Church of the Nazarene, 8401 Paseo Del Norte NE, Albuquerque, NM, with Pastor John Griffin officiating In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Animal Humane Assn., the American Heart Assn., or charity of your choice.
