Obituary for LIPP

Maurice Carl Lipp passed away in his apartment at the Grand Courts in Albuquerque New Mexico on June 27, 2004. His two sisters, Dorothy Hiller and Louise Anderson of Albuquerque, survive Maurice. His sons, Thomas and George and their spouses live in California. Maurice has six grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren. Maurice Carl Lipp was born on November 2, 1910 in Roswell, NM. His father, Dr. George A. Lipp, died when Maurice was 14. He attended grade school and High School in Roswell and graduated in 1928. The next fall Maurice entered the University of New Mexico where he joined Kappa Sigma Fraternity. He was a four-year football letterman at UNM and was a member of the first football team to travel to a game by air when UNM played Occidental College in the Rose Bowl. Maurice graduated from the college of Civil Engineering at UNM in 1932. Following graduation he worked for the New Mexico State Highway Department followed by the Conservancy District then transferring on to the Bureau of Reclamation in Denver. He later worked for the United Pueblos Agency with the Indian Service. On December 14, 1940 Maurice married Doris Brooks Nickson. He was called to active duty with the US Navy and moved to Honolulu where he survived the attack on Pearl Harbor. He was transferred to Newport Rhode Island where he was discharged from active duty with the Navy. Maurice returned to Denver where he resumed working for the Bureau of Reclamation. After two years in Denver he began working for the Department of the Navy as a civil engineer with the Bureau of Yards and Docks in Washington, D.C. Maurice was then promoted to be the facilities manager at the US Naval Ordinance Test Station in China Lake California. He was then transferred to Point Mugu on the coast of California where he managed the construction of the Pacific Missile range. Maurice took early retirement from government service to begin a career with a private organization in Washington, D.C. After 6 months in Washington he was transferred to Bangkok, Thailand where he and his wife Doris lived for four years. He then moved with the same company to Jeddah, Saudi Arabia where he managed the construction and implementation of water desalting and electrical generating plants for the Saudi Government. Maurice retired in 1978 and returned to Albuquerque, New Mexico where they were active with the Heights Cumberland Presbyterian Church. They made a trip to China and another to New Zealand, Australia, and Fiji with a group from the Heights Cumberland Presbyterian Church. Maurice and his wife Doris delivered for Meals on Wheels for eight years. Doris passed away on 12/01/1994 and his daughter Ann on 3/28/04. Cremation has taken place and memorial services will be held Friday, July 2, 2004 at 10:00 a.m., at Heights Cumberland Presbyterian Church, 8600 Academy Rd. NE, with Pastor Larry Moss officiating. Maurice will be interred beside Doris at 1:00 p.m, at the National Cemetery in Santa Fe.
